The Park

Situated in the Mandla district of Madhya Pradesh, Kanha national park is a Tiger reserve which extends over an area of 1,945-sq-kms. The major attraction of this Park is its Topography. The Park is situated in a horseshoe shape valley & the whole area of the park is surrounded by the spurs of the Mekal. The Surpan river travels through the park to provide a permanent source of water to its rich flora & fauna & known as the life line of the park. Kanha is also known as The sunset point because of the mesmerizing view of sunset from this spot.

Flora

Kanha National Park is popular among the tourists for its natural beauty of diverse flora & Fauna. The varied topography with a moderate climate nurtures the growth of a rich flora in Kanha National Park. Approximately 70 species of trees are found in Kanha. The vegetation in the park mainly consists Sal forests, large Bamboo stretches and the green meadows. The unique flora in the park assists an ample variety of wildlife in the Park.

Fauna

There are found the herds of spotted deer. One may easily spot small herds of beautiful Antelope, the Black Buck. If you were lucky enough, there are plenty of chances to spot the timorous Barking Deer which is also considered an indicator whose snapping warns other denizens of the forest that a predator is around. There is also a very strong possibility to find a rare Barasingha, the Swamp Deer. While prying to see a tiger, one can easily catch glimpses of the grazers, Porcupine, many Gray Langurs, Mongoose, Hyena, Jungle Cat, even a Leopard. Other wild attractions include variety of Deer such as the Barasingha, Chital or Spotted Deer, Chousingha, Nilgai as well as the majestic Gaur or Indian Bison and wild Pig.

Visitors are always eager to see Kanha’s major attraction, the Tiger. But one needs to be very be tolerant to see a tiger. The tiger is the supreme ruler in the forest & it is a mater of luck to spot a tiger in the park. Elephant safari is the most convenient way to see the tiger & other wild animals.

How to reach there:

By Train

Jabalpur at 169-kms is the convenient railway station to visit Kanha.

By Road

Kanha National Park is connected by road with places like Jabalpur, Khajuraho, Nagpur, Mukki & Raipur. Nearest areas within the park are Koshi- Kanha (9- kms), Koshi – Katia (4-kms), Koshi-Mukki (32-kms). There are regular to and fro bus service available for the visitors.

By Air

Nagpur at 266 Kms is the nearest Airport to visit Kanha National Park & is connected by various domestic airline services with Mumbai.

Best Season to go

The best visiting season to Kanha National Park is from the month of April to June and from November to January.

Note: The park is closed from July to Mid-November that is during the monsoon season. So the visitors are requested to plan their visit accordingly.

Timings:

15 November to 15 February – Sunrise to 12.00 noon and 3.00 pm to Sunset.

16 February to 30 April – Sunrise to 12:00 noon and 4.00 pm to Sunset.

1 May to 30 June – Sunrise to 11:00 am and 5.00 pm to Sunset.

During Winters: Maximum :23.9°C Minimum: 11.1°C

During Summers: Maximum: 40.6°C Minimum: 23.9°C

Do’s

Be prepared with a good camera and stock up on extra films so that you can capture the best wild life movements. But never use harsh flash lights & consult the forest guide before taking pictures or shooting videos.

Sunglasses, sunscreens and sun hats protect you from the harsh rays of the Sun and prevent sunburns. It is also advisable to wear comfortable and covered shoes with socks instead of floaters and Fancy foot wears.

Take only what you need to the jungle. Some jungle expeditions are weary and the extra equipment like tripods, munchies and the like will not only create a hindrance but also tire you out soon.

Stick to your Forest guide and group all the times.

Keep conversation restricted to the safari/expedition and avoid talking in a loud tone.

Don’t s

Try to get your vehicle driver to jump the queue.

Try to persuade the mahout to disturb the tiger in any way.

Stand on the howdah or unhook the bar.

Make loud noise or use flash photography.

Carry cellphones in the jungle or keep them on Vibrator / Silent mode . Best thing is to switch it off during the course of the safari because alien sounds such as those of cellphones may annoy or irritate the wild animals.
